It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Wendy Scheffers on October 28, 2026. Wendy touched countless lives with her boundless warmth, her radiant smile, and a kindness that extended effortlessly to friends, family, students, and strangers alike.

A visionary in her field, Wendy helped pioneer vital techniques for safe travel by individuals who are blind or low vision, shaping the profession and empowering generations. Across every level of education—from early elementary classrooms to graduate seminars—she was a legendary mentor whose influence ran deep. Above all, she was a deeply loyal friend and a cherished family member.

We in the Department of Special Education are so profoundly grateful to have called Wendy our colleague and friend for so many years. She will be greatly missed.
